Best beaches in Vieques in 2026
Start with La Chiva, Caracas, or Sun Bay. Choose the rest by road access, water conditions, and how far you want to drive.
The short answer
La Chiva is the best first choice for a long refuge beach day. Caracas has the most direct refuge approach, while Sun Bay gives you paved access and the clearest facilities plan near Esperanza. Add Playa Negra for a walk or Punta Arenas for a separate west-side outing.

East, south, then westPlaya Caracas
Red Beach
Caracas sits near the front of the eastern refuge beach run. Its direct approach and picnic shelters make it a practical choice for families and shorter beach days.
Sun Bay
Balneario Sun Bay
Sun Bay is the simplest beach to reach from Esperanza. Use it when facilities and a paved approach matter more than refuge seclusion.
Pata Prieta
A small eastern-refuge cove
Pata Prieta trades La Chiva's scale for a small cove. Parking and sand space are limited, so keep another refuge beach as a backup.
Media Luna
Half Moon Beach
Media Luna is a shallow south-coast cove. We have not completed a recent field check of the final approach, so ask your lodging or rental desk before driving beyond Sun Bay.
Punta Arenas
Green Beach
Punta Arenas anchors the west side and pairs with Kiani Lagoon. Allow more road time than the island map suggests and check the west gate before leaving town.
Playa Negra
Black Sand Beach
Playa Negra's dark mineral sand makes it a walking stop rather than an all-day beach base. The trail can hold mud after rain.
Playa Esperanza
The waterfront by the malecon
Playa Esperanza puts the water beside the malecon, lodging, and dinner. Choose it for an easy walk or sunset, then use another beach for the main swim day.
Plan one beach area per day
Group La Chiva, Caracas, and Pata Prieta into one eastern-refuge day. Keep Sun Bay, Media Luna, Playa Negra, and Esperanza together on the south side. Give Punta Arenas its own west-side block instead of crossing the island between swims.
A rental vehicle gives you the widest choice. Confirm where your rental agreement allows you to drive, carry water, and leave the beach before a gate or road condition becomes a problem.
