The best things to do in Vieques are a licensed night tour of Mosquito Bay, a beach day at Sun Bay or inside the wildlife refuge, snorkeling, horseback riding, and an evening in Esperanza. Stay at least two nights on a first trip. The bio bay happens after dark, and ferry timing makes a same-day visit a poor fit.
Reserve a vehicle and the bio bay before you arrive. Those two bookings decide how much of the island you can reach and which nights remain open for dinner or a second guided trip.

Sun Bay gives you the simplest beach day on Vieques: a paved road, parking, facilities, and a long curve of sand just east of Esperanza. Start here if you arrive without a high-clearance vehicle or want a swim before dinner on the malecon.
Caracas and La Chiva are the core east-side beach run. Punta Arenas anchors the west. Each feels farther from town than the mileage suggests, so choose one side of the island for the day and carry water. Guided rides cross the hills and coast outside Esperanza on Puerto Rican Paso Fino horses. Space is limited and weather can move a departure, so book this before the trip instead of waiting for an open afternoon.
A half-day charter reaches reefs and small cays beyond swimming distance. Kayaks and paddleboards suit calm stretches of the south coast and the open refuge lagoons. Ask the operator where conditions are best that morning rather than choosing a launch from an old post.

Esperanza is the easiest part of Vieques to enjoy on foot. Walk the waterfront, look across the cays, and stay for dinner. Many bio bay operators meet in or near town, which makes this the practical base for a car-free evening.
Isabel Segunda holds the ferry terminal, daily errands, and Fortin Conde de Mirasol on the hill above town. Visit the fort when its galleries are open, then walk the blocks around the plaza. Confirm museum hours before crossing the island because schedules change.
Playa Negra earns a stop for the black mineral sand streaking the shoreline. The trail can be muddy after rain, and the beach is better for a walk and photographs than a full-service beach day. Pair it with Esperanza or a south-side ride.
Horses graze beside roads, wander through town, and appear near the beaches. Slow down when they enter the road, keep your distance, and skip feeding them. You do not need a special stop; sightings become part of the drive.
The old ceiba near Mosquito Pier spreads a broad canopy over the west side of the island. It takes little time and fits on the way to Punta Arenas, the airport, or a west-coast snorkel.
Build one evening around a Vieques restaurant, or stop at the fish market, a food truck, or the local rum distillery. Opening days vary more than the distance between places, so use our current food directory before you start driving.
One full day
Visit Sun Bay or two east-side refuge beaches, then eat in Esperanza. Stay overnight if Mosquito Bay is the reason you came.
Two nights
Use one day for the refuge and bio bay. Give the other to a guided activity, Playa Negra, and the two towns.
Three nights or more
Hold a flexible beach day for the calmest weather, add the west side, and leave one afternoon without a reservation.
