Before lunch
Arrive and collect the trip
Take an early ferry or flight, collect your vehicle, and drop bags at your lodging. Leave space between arrival and any paid tour. Ferry delays and rental handoffs can consume the first part of the day.
2026 itinerary
Give the island three nights if you want three usable days. Keep each day on one side of Vieques, then move the bio bay to the darkest night your dates allow.
Arrive before lunch on Day 1 and leave on the morning of Day 4. Spend the first day around Esperanza, the second inside the eastern wildlife refuge, and the third in Isabel Segunda and the west. That route covers the best things to do in Vieques without burning the trip on repeated cross-island drives.
Book lodging, a vehicle, and a licensed Mosquito Bay tour before arrival. Use the Vieques moon calendar to choose the bio bay night, but keep another evening free in case weather changes the plan.
Day 1
South coast · light driving
Before lunch
Take an early ferry or flight, collect your vehicle, and drop bags at your lodging. Leave space between arrival and any paid tour. Ferry delays and rental handoffs can consume the first part of the day.
Afternoon
Sun Bay has a paved approach near Esperanza and makes an easy first swim. Save the refuge roads for tomorrow, when you have a full day and can check the gates before setting out.
After sunset
Walk the Esperanza waterfront and eat nearby. Tour Mosquito Bay tonight only if the moon and your arrival buffer make it the best choice. Otherwise, move the tour to Day 2 or 3 and keep this evening open.
Day 2
East side · full beach day
Morning
Read the current refuge notice before leaving town. Start at Caracas or continue to La Chiva if its road is open. Bring water and food so lunch does not force a drive back to town.
Afternoon
Stay on the east side for another beach. If you booked a snorkel, kayak, or paddle trip, replace the second stop rather than trying to fit both. Let the operator choose the launch from that day's wind and visibility.
Evening
Use tonight for Mosquito Bay if it is darker than Day 1 or your first tour moved. Compare licensed operators by price, boat type, and departure point before booking.
Day 3
North and west · check the gate
Morning
Start around the plaza and the working streets near the ferry terminal. Visit Fortin Conde de Mirasol when its galleries are open. Confirm museum hours before driving up the hill.
Late morning
Drive west to the old ceiba tree, a short stop near Mosquito Pier. Continue toward the west refuge only if the visitor notice and the gate show public access that day.
Afternoon
Use an open west-side beach, book a guided outing, or return to the coast that had the calmer water. Make the final dinner reservation only after checking which restaurants open that day.
Keep Day 1 around Esperanza and use Day 2 for the eastern refuge. Put Mosquito Bay on the darker night. On departure morning, add Isabel Segunda only if your ferry or flight leaves late enough to avoid rushing.
Stay in Esperanza, choose tours that include lodging pickup, and arrange each taxi before you need it. Use Sun Bay for the independent beach day. A driver or guided trip should handle the refuge and west-side legs.
Refuge access checked July 22, 2026 against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service visitor page. Ferry schedules, business hours, and tour availability can change after publication; follow the dated pages linked from each day.
