Licensed tours provide the only public access to Mosquito Bay. The moon and the last ferry shape which departure you should book.
The glow comes from Pyrodinium bahamense, a single-celled organism that flashes when water moves around it. Vieques holds the densest concentration anyone has recorded, bright enough that your paddle leaves a comet trail behind the boat. Leave the sunscreen and the phone camera behind. Sunscreen poisons a protected bay, and no phone sensor can resolve the light, so your guide will ask you to put it away.

On the water
Tours run about two hours, most of it in a two-person kayak. You paddle in the dark while a guide leads the raft of boats. Tell them when you book if you have not kayaked before, and they will put an experienced paddler in your boat.
Bring a dry bag and dry clothes, and put bug spray on before you leave your room. Sprayed at the launch, it washes straight into a protected bay. You will get wet on the way back.

Bio bay and the ferry
Overnight or same-dayThe tour itself is not the hard part. Fitting it around the Ceiba–Vieques ferry is. Book the sailing and the operator together, not one after the other.
- Can I do a bio bay tour on a same-day ferry trip?
- Sometimes, if you catch an early ferry over, book an early tour, and still clear the last ferry back. Many later departures end after that sailing, so same-day only works when both the operator and the day-of ferry itinerary line up. When they do not, plan a night on the island.
- Which bio bay departure still makes the last ferry?
- Ask the operator for the latest start that returns you to Esperanza with margin for the terminal. Schedules move, so confirm the official ferry PDF the morning you travel rather than trusting a generic last-boat time.
- Should I overnight for the bio bay?
- Yes if you want a later kayak departure, a dark-moon window that lands mid-evening, or any buffer when sailings cancel. Stay near Esperanza so you can walk to the meeting point; see where to stay.
